A CONVENIENCE store in York which recently closed will reopen “very soon”, while the post office which was based inside the shop will reopen within weeks.

That is according to a notice that has recently appeared in the window of the Mace shop, in Tadcaster Road, which has shut.

Dringhouses Post Office was situated inside the shop.

The Press reported on December 1 that the branch had closed suddenly, while the shop remained open at the time. Since then the shop has also closed.

However, a notice, from a Geordie and Kate McMillan, has appeared in the window of the shop to say there are plans to reopen both the store and post office.

The notice says: “Hopefully this store will be opening very soon under new ownership. The post office will be reinstated within four to six weeks.”

It also says a premises licence will be applied for so that the store can sell alcohol.

A spokesperson for Costcutter Supermarkets Group, which Mace is part of, has confirmed the shop will reopen “in the coming weeks under new ownership” but could not give a date.

A Post Office spokesman said: “The Post Office continues to work hard to reopen Dringhouses Post Office in York.

“We are pleased to confirm that we are currently in advanced discussions with a potential new operator which would enable us to restore Post Office services to the community.

“Full details of any new service will be confirmed as soon as they are available.”

Dringhouses and Woodthorpe ward councillor Stephen Fenton is pleased that there are plans to reopen the store and post office soon.

He said: “It is great to see that there are plans to reopen the Tadcaster Road store, and in due course restore Post Office services for Dringhouses.

“Many local residents lost their newspaper delivery service when the store closed, so if this can be re-started when the store opens it would be a big boost.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Fenton says City of York Council has installed two new cycle stands outside the cafe next to the closed store.
