TIME is running out to take part in the 2018 Active York Sports Awards.

Nominations close on Friday in the annual awards, which are organised by Active York, the city’s sport and active leisure partnership, which encourages people to be more active more often.

Entries are being sought in 16 categories and the winners will be announced at a ceremony at the University of York on Thursday, March 22.

Paula Stainton, chair of Active York, today urged people to nominate the stars and unsung heroes of the city’s sporting scene.

“The Active York Sports Awards are such a special event for our city as they recognise so many people,” she said.

“We live and work in a wonderful city that celebrates many things but these are the only awards to celebrate the role that sport and physical activity play.

“The Sports Awards showcase the achievements of individuals as athletes who are competing at exceptionally high levels and represent York on a national scale.

“Each year, I am reminded how incredible it is to think that some of our past and present winners will represent us on the Olympic stage and am so incredibly proud to help be a part of their journey.

“Our nomination process is simple because we want to hear from as many people as possible. Every nomination is an acknowledgement in itself of the fabulous work taking place in York.”

The 16 awards categories are: Junior Team/Club of the Year, Team/Club of the Year, Active Primary School, Active Secondary School, Active in York, Coach of the Year, Disabled Sportsperson of the Year, Student Sportsperson of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Young Disabled Sportsperson of the Year, Young Female Sportswoman of the Year, Young Male Sportsman of the Year, Youth Group Provider of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Sport.

To be eligible for nomination for any Active York Sports Award you must live, attend school or train or play sport within City of York Council’s boundaries.
