POLICE used a stinger to stop a driver suspected of stealing alcohol worth £180 from a North Yorkshire supermarket.
North Yorkshire Police said a 22-year-old driver from Harrogate allegedly stole 13 bottles of Disaronno amaretto from Morrisons in Harrogate Road, Ripon, at about 11.15am on Monday.
A spokesman said: "He then made off in a black Ford Fiesta which failed to stop for police as it travelled to Harrogate via Killinghall.
"Traffic cops deployed a stinger device to deflate the car’s tyres at 11.20am. They arrested the driver along with three passengers, a 29-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman and a 21-year-old woman."
Following further enquiries, the spokesman said the three passengers were released without further action, but the driver was charged with five offences.
He is due to appear before Harrogate Magistrates' Court on February 22, charged with theft from a shop, failing to stop for the police, dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
