A PETROL station with a food store in York has been taken over and relaunched.

The petrol station, in Tadcaster Road, which used to be a Texaco garage with a Co-op store, closed for refurbishment last Saturday, but reopened on Thursday and is now being run by Applegreen.

All 11 members of staff who worked at the station and store have kept their jobs.

Karen Tomlinson, manager at the store, said: "We're offer the cheapest fuel around.

"The store has a good range of food products, lots of exciting new products that we didn't have when we were a Co-op. We're offering hot food, including pies and pasties.

"I love it, it's got a really great and fresh feel."

A Co-op spokesman added: "We can confirm that our petrol food station store on Tadcaster Road has been sold. An important consideration for us was that colleagues would have continued employment as a result of this sale, and this agreement ensures that colleagues will continue in their jobs. The decision to sell the store is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment from the colleagues working at the store."

Meanwhile, the Post Office said it is still "working hard" to reopen its Dringhouses branch, which was based inside a convenience store near the petrol station.

The Press reported on December 1 last year that the branch had closed suddenly, while the Mace shop remained open at the time. But the shop itself has also closed since.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the continued temporary closure of Dringhouses Post Office.

"We would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore services as quickly as possible."

The Post Office was unable to confirm if it was looking for a new location, or if the branch would reopen at the same location.
