HALF-A-MILLION pounds is going to be spent upgrading a cycle path that passes through the centre of York.

Next year's capital budget, revealed yesterday by the city council, includes £500,000 for repairs on the Route 65 cycle track.

The path runs north to south through the city running close to the river from Skelton past Rawcliffe and into the city centre, and then south over Millennium Bridge past the racecourse and onto the solar system path - but parts are 20 to 30 years old and need attention.

Big investments are also promised for electric buses and a smarter travel programme - costing nearly £8 million in total - as well as £500,000 for flood defences on Fordlands Road bridge.

On top of this, £100,000 is being spent checking and cleaning gullies in 2018/2019; and £2.5 million will go into a grants pot for disabled people.
