85 years ago

The LNER had decided to construct 23 additional buffet cars for all passenger train services not already equipped with restaurant cars.

The latest travelling buffet design, a saloon type railcar with tables and seating for 22 passengers, would be fully fitted with a large counter and a compact kitchen where meals could be prepared.

A full tea shop and buffet service would also be available, with hot and cold drinks and dishes at charges like those supplied in cafes.

During a local meeting in Escrick the town’s clerk had reported that a significant amount of work had commenced on the new drainage system in Heslington Lane, and that there had been no cases of any infectious diseases in the area.

Mr Alfred Smith, one of the earliest X-ray operators, had died at his home in Legbourne, Lincolnshire.

Smith, one of the pioneering members of the X-ray, was also the 14th victim to suffer from X-ray dermatitis.

50 years ago

The former vice-president Mr Nixon had announced that he would stand as a candidate for the United States Republican presidential nomination.

During a long declaration he stated, “that he had learnt the awesome nature of the great decisions a President faces.”

In York, the paint and wallpaper shop G Lamb and Sons, in King’s Square, had been sold, ending an association between the firm and square extending over 120 years.

According to the managing director Mr Henry Lamb, his reason for selling up was, due to yellow lines all the way round King’s Square.

And Customers at Leak and Thorp’s store in Coney Street, York, had been very generous, throwing coins into its “fountain” an artificial pool set up in the shop’s restaurant.

After six weeks the silver and coppers had amounted to a grand total of £35 bound for some of York’s local charities.

20 years ago

Pop stars across the country were racing to secure a deal for the Football Association’s official World Cup song.

Lobbying for the top spot were Blur and Echo And The Bunnymen.

Comedy duo Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer were also said to be among the leading contenders.

And York milkman Kevin Parkin was going high-tech in his one-man battle to save the doorstep pints with his new custom-built refrigerated milk float offering chilled milk on the doorstep.
