APPLEFIELDS school in Tang Hall has had half of its minibus fleet put out of action following a callous theft over Christmas.

Exhausts and catalytic converters were taken from two of the school's four minibuses, which were in the school car park at Applefields - which teaches secondary aged pupils who have a wide range of special needs.

It is believed that the thieves had also intended to ransack the other two vehicles, as there was evidence of tampering, but were disturbed during the theft.

Head teacher Adam Booker said: "The minibuses are in constant use and it means that we now have to operate a reduced fleet for the next few weeks.

"I am saddened that this is going to directly impact our students continuing to access things in the community, whether it be leisure activities, fitness or work placements - we have some very disappointed young people here."

The damaged buses are currently with the City of York Council transport team for repairs, but are expected to be out of action for at least another week as parts need to be sourced from abroad.

In the meantime, Mr Booker said that a local taxi firm, Streamline, which brings the majority of pupils into school has offered to help out.

He said: "Crime of any type is awful, but when it targets those that are most vulnerable in society it's appalling.

"We are just heartened that our community, locally and in York as a whole, really support us in many ways."

The crime is believed to have occurred when the school was closed for the Christmas holidays, sometime between December 27 and January 3.

It has been reported to North Yorkshire Police, and a police spokesperson said that investigations are still ongoing.
