ABOUT 1,750 runners from all over the country have been pounding the roads around York in the city's annual Brass Monkey Half Marathon this morning.

The 35th annual race set off from Bishopthorpe Road near York Racecourse and took a flat route via Bishopthorpe, Acaster Selby and Appleton Roebuck and back through Bishopthorpe to finish behind the Racecourse grandstands.

The event was organised by the York Knavesmire Harriers running club, which had about 200 volunteers working as marshalls to ensure it could take place safely.

Director Tim Clarke said the conditions - cloudy, chilly but dry - were 'perfect.'

He said gritters had been around the route of the run this morning to ensure no one slipped on any icy patches.

Runners had entered from across the country and even from America, and all 1,750 places had been snapped up within 40 minutes of being made available.
