Yorkshire wildlife protectors have welcomed the Government’s 25-year plan for wildlife and the environment - and highlighted the areas they want to get help.

Rob Stoneman, chief executive of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said: “All of this commitment is welcome but it must be backed up with action – with funding, the right institutional arrangements and legislation to turn commitments into a better environment rich in wildlife for all the people of Yorkshire.”

He welcomed the commitment to restore peatlands and urged her to reinstate the nature improvement area programme which helped wetlands near the Humber.

He wanted more done to protect marine life and to reduce plastic waste going into the sea.

And he supported government plans to reward farmers for wildlife conservation and flood prevention.
