ONE is taking part just weeks after cancer treatment - another family has re-organised its holiday.

That is the kind of commitment winners of our running numbers competition have shown in taking part in this year's Race for Life - despite flooding setbacks.

Together with Cancer Research UK, we ran a competition this summer which gave readers a chance to wear the coveted one and two running numbers in this year's two Race for Life events in York.

Readers wrote in to tell us why they were taking part - and we picked out four worthy winners.

This year's event has had to be put back twice because of torrential rain which waterlogged the running track.

But all four winners of our running numbers competition are still determined to be there on the day.

Laura Ward, a teenage thyroid cancer patient of Burnholme, is still committed to being our number one in the afternoon race - despite the fact she will have gone through radioactive treatment for her illness only a few weeks before.

She will be joined by Sadie Sullivan, from Rawcliffe, who will wear the number two racing badge.

Sadie is determined take part on August 26, despite suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Meanwhile, the Strange family, from Rawcliffe, is planning to don our number one and two numbers in the morning race - after rescheduling a holiday break to accommodate the new date.

Jessica Strange, who has entered the Race for Life aged only five, will wear the top number.

She is taking part with her mum, Karen - who will wear the second number - and grandmother, Pauline, both of whom are cancer survivors.

Karen said: "We were going to go for a long weekend, but we have rescheduled.

"It's the first time three generations of our family have done it together. I don't think the change of date has affected anybody - you can't help the weather.

"We're all so desperate to do it and raise this money. I'd like to think we'll be safe in August!"

York Race for Life organiser Stuart Leslie said: "I think the dedication that winners of the number one and two running numbers have shown to take part on the new date is absolutely amazing.

"We understand it might not be the most suitable date, but with the tight racing schedule of the racecourse this is the only date we still had free in the summer to hold the event."

The new Race for Life events will now take place at 10.30am and 2.30pm. There are still spaces available for the morning race. To sign up, log on to www.raceforlife.org or phone the hotline on 08705 134314.
