CALLING all art lovers - how do you fancy bagging a piece of original art, and helping charity too? For the last month, a unique art auction has been taking place at City Screen.

More than 50 original art works have been hung along the cinema’s first floor corridor. Visitors have been invited to ‘post’ silent bids into a post-box hanging on the wall nearby.

On Sunday, the box will be opened - and each artwork will go to the highest bidder. The money raised will be split between two local mental health charities, York Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, York.

So far, bids worth about £2,000 in total have been submitted. But art lovers still have until the cinema closes at 11.30pm tomorrow to submit bids, says Lowra Kitchingman of Rethink Mental Illness.

“We’re really pleased with the way things have been going,” Lowra said. “There have been a lot of people placing bids. But there are still one or two artworks with no bids, and some with low bids. So it is a chance to get a piece of original art at a good price - and help charity too!”
