A MAN has been sentenced after "terrorising" his ex-partner, who suffered a broken nose and a gash above her eye in two separate incidents.

Michael Brian Bowes, 29, of St Oswald's Close, Wilberfoss, East Yorkshire, slammed a door which hit his ex-partner in the face and broke her nose, York Crown Court heard.

On another occasion, he threw a slate coaster which hit his former partner in the face, causing a wound above her eye, the court was told.

In the first incident, the pair had an argument after they had been to a pub on November 4 last year.

Jessica Strange, prosecuting, said: "They met up with friends at a public house. It was the defendant's birthday.

"They left the public house and had an argument. He told her to shut up.

"He slammed a door and it hit the complainant in the face. It hit her nose and broke her nose. He took her to the hospital.

"The defendant apologised to the complainant."

On December 23 last year, the pair had been on a night out in York city centre before returning home and having an argument in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

The complainant was unhappy that Bowes had got so drunk and while arguing in the kitchen, he threw a slate coaster which hit her above the eye, causing a two centimetre wound, the court heard.

He then punched a hole in a downstairs wall.

The court was also told that the complainant was woken up on Christmas Eve by Bowes urinating on the bathroom door. Shortly after, he punched a hole in an upstairs wall.

Police arrested him on December 28.

In defence, Ben Thomas, said: "These are serious offences. It appears they were not premeditated offences.

"The defendant accepts to me that what he did was wrong and his behaviour was totally unacceptable. He apologises to the victim and the community as a whole."

He added: "It is nearly 12 months since these offences and he has stayed out of trouble."

Mr Thomas said the pair's relationship is over and the defendant is now living with his parents.

The Honorary Recorder of York, Judge Paul Batty QC, told Bowes: "This was appalling drunken behaviour, in two separate incidents you must have terrified the complainant.

"You terrorised your ex-partner in circumstances which I believe are a disgrace."

Bowes pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the basis of recklessness, wounding and criminal damage.

He sentenced Bowes to 20 months imprisonment, suspended for two years. He also ordered Bowes to do 250 hours unpaid work, and to pay £1,500 to the victim.

Bowes has also been made subject to a restraining order banning him from contacting the complainant until further order.
