A YORK charity raising funds for paediatric brain tumour research has made it a hattrick of victories in the Yorkshire Marathon Corporate Relay.

OSCAR’s Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity (PBTC), which entered 12 teams across all three categories of the relay – open, mixed and female – triumphed for the third year running in the female race.

The honours went to OSCAR’s PBTC 2, which clocked a time of three hours, 40 minutes and 16 seconds.

New Image was the second female team home in a time of 4:20:21 and OSCAR’s PBTC 1 took third place in 4:22:14.

OSCARS (Ongoing Support, Care and Research) was founded in November 2014 by the parents and friends of Oscar Hughes, who died of a brain tumour aged nine in May 2014.

Gastonauts, staff from Northern Gas Networks, were the winners of the open category with a time of 3:03:15, finishing ahead of second-place Great Rail Journeys in 3:06:34 with Team AM clocking 3:19:55 in third.

In the fiercely-contested mixed category, York Sport emerged the winners with a time of 3:22:08, just 24 seconds ahead of Ripley Castle.

Running On Gas, also from Northern Gas Networks, took third place in 3:31:41.

The event is a popular feature of the Yorkshire Marathon staged by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All and set off from the University of York’s Heslington campus on October 8.

The race splits the 26.2 miles into six legs, making it accessible to runners of all abilities and is open to companies, sports clubs, groups of friends and other organisations.

As well as a great networking opportunity, the relay is one of the biggest corporate running events in the north and brings an added dimension to marathon day.

Hettie Barker, sponsor and corporate assistant at Run For All, said: “Scores of teams turned out to make the Yorkshire Marathon Corporate Relay another great success and we are grateful to all the runners who supported the event.

“As well as introducing a bit of friendly team rivalry to the day, the relay is a great opportunity to raise money for a charity and I know that some excellent good causes will have benefitted from the teams’ efforts.

“Congratulation to all the winners and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2018.”

The Yorkshire Marathon is part of the legacy of the inspirational Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by taking on a series of tough physical challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Next year’s Yorkshire Marathon will be on Sunday, October 14, and individual and team entries are open now.
