A TEENAGE cadet from York won third prize in a county-wide contest.

Bentley Wiley is a 16-year-old student in the lower sixth at All Saints RC School in York, studying maths, physics, computer science and history for his A-levels.

He is also an active member of his local army cadet unit - Fulford detachment, Yeomanry Barracks on Fulford Road.

At the weekend Cadet Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Wiley took part in the Yorkshire North & West Army Cadet Force’s (YN&W ACF’s) annual Cadet of The Year competition.

The arduous tasks in the competition included first aid scenarios, written tests, orienteering and a demanding march and shoot challenge.

The outcome was that, out of about 1,400 cadets in the Yorkshire North and West area, SSgt Wiley was judged to have achieved the third highest result.

His detachment commander is Jeff Millward.

He said: “We are all very proud of him - he is a great cadet who sets a wonderful example to the other cadets, not only in Fulford but across the county.”
