YORK and North Yorkshire councils have been given nearly £200,000 to improve the way they treat armed forces personnel.
The Ministry of Defence grant of £196,000 has gone to a partnership of councils, with City of York leading the Armed Forces Covenant work with North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council, Hambleton District Council, and Richmondshire District Council.
The money will help pay for training sessions on “understanding military culture and transition”, which will be run with York St John University, and it will also fund research to better understand armed forces composition, and highlight good practice and inequality.
Cllr Keith Orrell, York’s Armed Forces Champion, said the people of York have a “long standing relationship with the armed forces community”.
He said: “I hope that this work will help us to further strengthen community links and integration with the armed forces community and increase awareness of issues affecting them.”
