ROAD works will start around the A19 junction with Wheldrake Lane, at Crockey Hill this week.
The work will not interrupt traffic but is needed before a £1 million government funded road widening project to ease congestion in the area can start.
Work starting this week will remove invasive weed species like Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed and ten other trees, and to divert a gas pipeline close to the junction.
The council said it designed the work to minimise the impact on trees, but will plant 37 trees of different species to create a more diverse habitat in the New Year.
In the long term, an extra southbound lane will be built on approach to, and through the junction to ease rush-hour congestion heading south out of York, particularly at the A64 Fulford Interchange.
Main construction works begin in mid-January 2018.
