A MOTHER and son have been jailed for 10 years between them for a £1.5 million vacuum cleaner scam against mostly elderly and vulnerable victims.

The York-based national e-crime trading standards squad brought Thomas Scoffin, 31, of Leeds and his 61-year-old mother Linda, of Lincoln, to justice for running a company that overcharged Dyson vacuum cleaner customers for unnecessary and sometimes damaging maintenance and part replacements, Leeds Crown Court heard.

He was jailed for seven years and banned from being a company director for eight. She was jailed for three years and banned from running a company for six years. Both were convicted of conspiracy to defraud by a Leeds jury. Through their company Excel Servicing Ltd of Leeds they cold called members of the public across the north of England, falsely claiming to represent Dyson.
