TWO men are still being questioned by police tonight in connection with a serious sexual assault in York.

The incident occurred in the Bootham and Marygate area at around 10pm yesterday, a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

A police cordon was put in place on the corner of Bootham and Marygate, next to the Hamlet of St Marygate, but was removed at 9.40am today.

An officer was seen taking photographs of the area that had been taped off.

The spokesman added: “The victim, a local woman, is receiving specialist support while inquiries continue."

He said the arrested men, both from York, were still being held in custody this evening for questioning.

Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation, are urged to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for the York Serious Crime Team.
