A BBC quiz contestant has denied raping a woman when both were students at the University of York.
Bartolomeo Joly de Lotbiniere, 22, who appeared on University Challenge, denied that he had apologised to her in a text message.
The jury in a trial at Bradford Crown Court heard he also sent the woman text messages a few days after the alleged rape which included, "I was a disgrace" and "I’ll try my best not to act like a bloody 14-year-old again".
Giving evidence, Joly de Lotbiniere said he had felt himself to be a “disgrace” because he had been unable to perform during sexual intercourse.
He said he had acted like a 14-year-old because he had made himself out to be sexually experienced on the night of the allegation when in fact this was not the case.
Joly de Lotbiniere denies sexual assault and rape at the alleged victim’s room on June 27, 2014.
He told the jury they started kissing in the corridor outside her room after arriving there together at the end of a night out.
He claimed that she helped undress him and that he stopped the sex because he was having problems physically.
The prosecution alleges he forced himself on the woman against her will.
Earlier in the trial, the jury heard how the woman told police about the incident after his appearance on the quiz show turned him into a social media sensation.
Joly de Lotbiniere, who studied history, was part of the University of York team in the programme’s 2015 series.
The trial continues.
