BARRELLS and pumps are in place and hundreds of glasses are stacked and ready to go as York Beer and Cider Festival gets ready to open its doors today.

The four-day York Racecourse event boasts a huge selection of the county’s finest ales - and one of the longest bars in Europe.

A total of 530 beers and 100 ciders - 300 from Yorkshire’s breweries - will be served to thirsty drinkers.

Yorkshire, which has 170 breweries, will be very well represented at the festival with the largest selection ever available under one roof.

Organisers have also promised a huge beer garden serving takeaway cuisines from around the world with something for everyone, including high quality vegetarian options.

The guest VIP this year is the beer author Roger Protz, also editor of the Good Beer Guide, who will be at the festival today and tomorrow to sign copies of his new book IPA – A Legend in our Time.
