STREETLIGHTS in North Yorkshire could be replaced by more environmentally friendly lights.

Next week the county council will decided whether to start replacing all streetlights with new LED technology in a project that would take three years.

LED lights are more environmentally friendly, cheaper to run and need less maintenance - something that would be benefit in outlying rural areas.

North Yorkshire has 50,400 streetlights and county council bosses say LED equipment would cost about 40 per cent less to power.

They will make a decision at a meeting of the council executive on September 26.
