LIBERAL Democrats in York have tonight met to discuss their favoured nominees to replace two suspended City of York Council Executive members.

Councillors Keith Aspden and Nigel Ayre were suspended two weeks ago pending the outcome of a standards investigation. Details of the allegations have not yet been made public.

The situation has since seen a division open up between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, who have been in joint control of the City of York Council since May 2015.

A joint administration agreement written up when the coalition took power in May 2015 requires four Executive members from both the Liberal Democrat and Conservative groups, and named Keith Aspden as deputy leader.

On Monday, members of the party met in the city to debate their recommendations for replacements for the suspended councillors on the council’s Executive.

Cllr Aspden’s roles as deputy leader of the council and Executive member for economic development and community engagement need to be appointed for the duration of the suspension, as does Cllr Ayre’s role as Executive member for culture, leisure and tourism.

Details on the party’s favoured nominees have not yet emerged, but it is understood an announcement could be made on Tuesday.
