A HISTORIC military regiment “came home” at the weekend, as one of York’s medieval buildings opened its doors to the public.
The Red Tower, near Navigation Road, opened on both Saturday and Sunday as part of Heritage Open Days and greeting visitors were York couple Tom and Donna Gibson in Viking costumes as well as civil war re-enactors from the Sealed Knot “Sir Thomas Glemham’s Regiment of Foote”.
It was something of the homecoming, according to the events organisers, as during the English Civil War, Sir Thomas Glemham was governor of York, meaning it is likely that his own regiment would have used the Red Tower to defend York in the siege of 1644.
Barry Beckwith said they had welcomed impromptu visitors out to walk the walls, as well as people who had gone specially to visit the Red Tower.
