THE torrential rain which hit Yorkshire yesterday reminded us that rising river levels aren’t the only cause of flooding. We also have to be able to cope with flash floods.
Sewers and drains in parts of York and in Malton and Scarborough were clearly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of rainwater that fell. Building defensive flood walls is vital. But we must ensure drains and sewers can cope with heavy rainfall, too.
