THE Duke of York marked an historic milestone for York Racecourse yesterday when he presented a trophy to the winner of its first £1million race.

The Duke, who is patron of the racecourse, was on hand in the winner’s enclosure after Jim Crowley rode Ulysses to victory in the flagship Juddmonte International.

Hopes that Frankie Dettori, riding Shutter Speed, would win to become the most successful jockey in the race’s history, moving ahead of Lester Piggott, were dashed when he finished fifth - although he had won the previous race on Cracksman.

The sun came out from behind the clouds just before the Juddmonte started, creating a dramatic turnaround from the morning when the course was lashed by torrential rain.

Course spokesman James Brennan said the rain reduced the attendance to about 16,500, with picnickers deterred and some having traffic problems because of flooding in Fishergate, but those who “kept the faith” were rewarded with a fantastic afternoon of entertainment.

The rain also led to some muddy tracks developing in the parking area on Knavesmire but Mr Brennan said any problems would be easily overcome.

He said the forecast was relatively good for the next three days of the meeting, with some sunshine likely on most days and maximum temperatures of 20C expected.

Racegoers did not let the morning rain deter them from displaying high summer fashion and remarkable hats and fascinators, and more were expected today, Ladies Day. Celebrity racegoers in the crowd included former Spurs and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, who had a horse taking part.
