THOUSANDS of hand-crafted characters have yarn bombed a place of worship as the Knitted Bible tour arrives at St Helen's Church in Bilton-in-Ainsty.

The 33 scenes from the Bible are depicted through knitted people and animals, including The Last Supper that has been staged around a long table.

Church archivist Susie Pilling said: "There are some amazing scenes including Noah's Ark and The Lost Sheep, with hundreds of sheep that I have placed coming down the steps from the pulpit. We've also got Lazarus throwing off his bandages. It's quite moving."

It is a modern version of the imagery that would have adorned the walls of the church in the medieval period. The Knitted Bible was created by knitters at the United Reform Church in Hartlepool and it has been touring since 2007.

You can see the display in St Helen's between 11am and 4pm next weekend, August 26 and 27.
