AN AFTERNOON of tea and cakes has helped raise £1,267 for a teenage cancer ward.

Sue Peace and her Sunshine Team have now donated almost £46,000 to The Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in Leeds after Mrs Peace’s daughter, Becky, was treated for Hodgkins Lymphoma as a teenager.

The mum, from Copmanthorpe, hosted more than 80 supporters during the afternoon as they tucked into homemade sandwiches, cream scones and cakes on china plates.

A chocolate cake took pride of place in a Guess the Weight competition and was donated by the winner to Arclight homeless shelter in York.

Mrs Peace began fundraising to “give something back” to the ward after Becky underwent eight months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy when she was 15.

Becky is now on maternity leave from her job as an assistant psychologist with her new baby boy.

Mrs Peace, who also organises the Sunshine Ball at York Racecourse, said: “To say thank you for my daughter's life wasn’t enough - it feels so good to be giving something back.”
