YORK has been reacting to the news that a replica Shakespearean theatre could go up in the city centre next year.

A production company has drawn up plans for a 950 seater, three-tiered wooden theatre to be built on Castle car park, and is now waiting for councillors to agree its temporary use of the land from June 22 to September 2.

Press readers have been reacting to news of the plan online, with many welcoming the idea of a new attraction in the city.

Commentators wrote they “couldn’t think of anything better for that piece of land”, and called it an excellent idea for locals and visitors alike.

One, using the name “It’s life Jim, but not as we know it” turned to phrases coined by Shakespeare, writing: “I can’t wait for this. I will be screwing up my courage to the sticking post and (though never a borrower or a lender be) hang the expense - I want to see it all!!”

Others, however, pointed out that the city centre car park brings in important income for the city council, and is important for visitors coming into the city to use other businesses.

One reader using the name harry44 wrote: “Has there been a public consultation about the closure of the car park - temporary or otherwise? Many people use the car park all year round to support The Grand Opera House, a venue that has been there for many years, and hopefully will remain for years to come - not just a temporary wonder to suit the visitors.

“I agree that the Castle car park looks terrible, but many York residents rely on it.”Another commenter, called SR0843, asked whether ticket prices would keep the performances within reach of York residents. comparing it to last year’s Mystery Plays which cost York Minster almost £600,000 after smaller than expected audiences turned up.

“If you price fairly, for the English speaking local market, taking into account York wages and the cost of living for locals, you’re on to a winner and you’ll be very well supported.”
