ACOMB will be offering Yorkshire hospitality in style all week as the county celebrates its day.

Businesses and organisations in the area have dressed their windows in displays featuring the Yorkshire White Rose and Yorkshire blue to mark Yorkshire Day on Tuesday.

The week-long celebrations are the latest community event organised in the west of York aimed at bringing the community closer together and raising its profile.

The celebrations began today with Acomb Parish Hall in Front Street giving a Yorkshire version of the monthly coffee and craft morning.

The Sun Inn and The Inn on the Green, both on Acomb Green, will serve Yorkshire fare for their Sunday lunches tomorrow including the obligatory Yorkshire pudding.

On Monday the Tea on the Green cafe, also on Acomb Green, picks up the baton and is offering Yorkshire parkin and other traditional fare from today until Friday.

Several organisations in Acomb centre along Front Street and York Road between Carr Lane and Gale Lane including a craft shop, travel agency and a beauty salon, have decked their windows in Yorkshire flags and other local items as they take part in a competition.

On Friday, Hannah Savage of York Art Gallery and John Parker of the Inn on the Green will judge the window displays and declare the best which will receive a Yorkshire-theme hamper donated by Morrison’s Acomb store. There will also be prizes for second and third places.

In recent years, Acomb has hosted festivals celebrating local talent and its first Christmas light switch-on last November and a regular monthly market in Front Street celebrated its first anniversary last month.

Many of the events have been organised by Acomb Alive.
