I AM a resident of Deighton on the A19 and having completed what many villagers have worked on over many, many, many years, we finally succeeded a few years ago in gaining a 40mph zone on the A19 past the village.

Over the time since we gained it, we have noticed that less and less motorists actually obey the 40mph zone especially at rush hour times and in the evening, and that trucks and buses are the worst offenders.

So recently I have been in contact with the speed control administrators (95 Alive campaign) in getting “dataloggers” fitted to identify the speeds past the village.

I received the “standard letter” telling me that no action would be taken because of the 85 percentile that is applied, and that due to this, the speed control administrators would not apply speed cameras or take any action, even though as villagers we know that speeds are excessive through the 40 zone.

Now I begin to wonder how many villages and councils or areas around York have been fobbed off by the “85 percentile get out clause”. I am sure that there are dozens.

Getting some sort of speed reduction in Deighton seems to be impossible, yet there are always camera vans on the 30mph zone on Skipwith Road in Escrick, so it seems other priorities have precedence.

By sending this letter I am hoping that other villages/councils/areas who may see it and who feel they have been “fobbed off” by the 85 per cent get out clause get in touch.
