A LONG-SERVING member of the Fraternitie of Olde Selebians, Peter Palmer, has been presented with a framed certificate to commemorate 50 years of membership.

Peter, a retired oil industry executive with Shell and BP, followed his father Rowland – a former president – into the fraternitie.

A past president in 1986 and 2015, he was the first member to hold the role on two occasions, and it was also the first time a son had held the presidency previously held by his father (in 1971).

In his 50 years, he has seen many changes in the town brought to the attention of the authorities by the Selebians.

The biggest and most recent challenge was the protest against the naming of the new hospital which was going to be called Selby Community Hospital.

The fraternitie took on the health authority, and got it named The New Selby War Memorial Hospital.

“It was a good result, once we challenged the authority we got the backing of many in the town and won the day,” said Peter.

A freeman of the city of York, he has held other offices outside the Fraternitie, being a former magistrate and a member of the parole board of England and Wales.
