FIREFIGHTERS dealt with a fire near a war memorial in York, which is believed to have been started deliberately.

The fire, in the war memorial garden, in Leeman Road, involved an old mattress.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call about the fire at 5.40pm yesterday.

A spokesman for the fire service said the cause of the fire "was believed to be deliberate."

One hose reel was used to put out the flames.
