85 years ago

Sir John Hunt lead a meeting of the quarterly Court of Governors of Bootham Park, reporting that even though the quarter had been uneventful, much work had been done in maintaining the hospital in good condition.

Seventeen admissions had been recorded, of which 13 were voluntary patients four certified.

There had been three deaths, all from natural causes, and the number of patients remaining on the books was 92.

All patients appeared contented and the workroom had been a helpful asset.

According to the “Maid in Mayfair” column, Wimbledon was no longer the dress show it used to be.

“The reason is, I think, that it is altogether too crowded nowadays. No sensible woman would dream of wearing a really pretty frock and subject it to the crush of the centre court or even of court No 1."

50 years ago

Actress Jayne Mansfield who had recently returned to the United States from a tour of Britain which included a visit to York, had been killed along with two unidentified men when the car she was travelling in struck a lorry.

Miss Mansfield was the second film star to die in a car crash in the past four days.

Pictured in the York Press was the Sheriff of York, claiming a kiss from the Lady Mayoress Mrs W Hargrave, as he handed over the staff ‘for use in keeping her husband in order’ during his year in office.

Local artist Jack Leonard hung up what was left of his brushes after completing one of the biggest scenic design jobs in the country.

Thanks to Jack’s talents Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre was awash with 80 gallons of paint.

Two potential buyers had a week left to save one of North Yorkshire’s independent schools, St Hilda’s School at Sneaton Castle, Whitby, which had run into financial trouble with debts approaching £500,000.

A York suburb had been transformed into the city’s answer to Tinsel Town.

Up to 200 Foxwood residents were preparing for lights, camera, action as work began on a new film produced by Foxwood Community Centre.

And Sir Leon Brittan, former Cabinet minister and vice-president of the European Commission, paid a visit to York, as guest of honour at St Peter’s School Commemoration Day.

The former Richmond MP was Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Margaret Thatcher before becoming a European Commissioner in 1989.
