A TEENAGER who set up spy cameras in bathrooms at a York restaurant and education site has been ordered to work with an offending team for 12 months.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, filmed six victims in two locations across the city and admitted 11 counts of voyeurism and two counts of taking indecent photographs of children during an earlier hearing at York Youth Court.

His crime was discovered when a female member of staff at the restaurant went into the bathroom to get changed and found a USB device and small camera underneath an apron and inside a hoodie hanging up in a cubicle.

When the footage was viewed it showed the defendant setting up the camera.

He also told staff it was his hoodie and a laptop in his bedroom was found to be connected to cameras placed in the staff toilet of an education site.

The images showed women going to the toilet and exposing their underwear when they undressed.

Abigail Langford, prosecuting, said the 17-year-old’s victims now felt unsafe at work.

She said: “All the victims have a similar tone of concern going forward.”

A victim impact statement read out in court described one victim as feeling like her “privacy had been violated and I’m now questioning security at work”.

Another added: “I always think about security.”

The youngster was made subject to a referral order by District Judge Marie Mallon and a restraining order was put in place to stop him contacting the victims for 12 months.

She told the defendant: “If I make a referral order you will get the support and treatment you need.

“What society wants and these victims want is the assurance this will never happen again.

“The court takes these offences very seriously.

“If you do re-offend in the future the likelihood is you will be over 18 and will be dealt with in the adult court.

“I want to stress to you how serious these matters are and you have heard the impact this has had.”
