A WOMAN who was attacked in a York nightclub has called on the public to help identify a suspect.

The woman, who asked not to be named, was on the dancefloor with friends in the early hours of Sunday, June 4, when she was assaulted.

She said: "All of a sudden I felt this enormous pain in the back of my neck, and someone had hold of the back of my hair and their other hand was under my jaw, trying to pull me down to the ground.

"I don't remember if someone pulled her off me or she gave up, because I was having a panic attack. I just remember being on the floor and people were coming up and seeing if I was okay. The other people were lovely, really kind."

The victim went to York Hospital for treatment, and police confirmed they have launched an investigation.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called to a report of an assault in Popworld on George Hudson Street, York, at about 1.45am on June 4.

"The victim, a local woman in her 30s, suffered a neck injury and has given a statement to officers. Enquiries are ongoing, including CCTV checks at the venue. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference 12170096918."

The woman said: "I really would like whoever it was to be caught, and for justice to be done because what concerns me is she can go on and do this to other people.

"The door staff did try to find her, I'll give them credit, but they were unable to track her down. She was between 30 and 40, wearing a white top and blue jeans, with brown highlighted hair. She was with a bald man wearing a blue top. I just hope someone who knows more has the decency to come forward and stop it happening to anyone else."
