POLICE have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses who saw a fight in a York street to get in touch.

The fight in the Monkton Road / Elmfield Avenue area involved a number of people believed to have used weapons, said North Yorkshire Police.

"A local man in his 20s received serious injuries for which he is receiving treatment at York Hospital," said a force spokesman. 

"A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with this incident. He has been released on bail as inquiries continue.

"Officers are appealing for any witnesses in the area at the time who may have seen or heard any disturbances.

"They also wish to identify anyone seen coming from or going towards the area at the time, who may have been involved or witnessed the events themselves."

He said police patrols had been taking place in the area to reassure the community.

The Press has reported previously that armed officers closed off Elmfield Avenue around 4pm when a group of men were seen in the street with weapons.

The road was closed for around one hour while armed police searched the scene, and later arrested a man in hospital.

Lorraine Eadie, a resident on Elmfield Avenue, said: "It was pretty mad - there must have been half a dozen police along here.

"We saw police arriving and when they were walking around in the street we realised it must be something pretty serious."
