MUCH has been written about how June signals the end of May (a bit of political satire for you there after the crazy past couple of days), but it also of course marks the beginning of summer.

So why not wind down after all the recent Mayhem (there's another pun for you) with some chilled fresh tipples for long summer days - and we have three of them here, of various colours too so no real political partisanship to worry about.

They come from The Wine Society's portfolio and, Cor(byn) blimey, they are good.

Talking of which, while we've been a bit Beaujolais crazy in this column recently, we feel that after the rise of one particular lot this week, we may as well kick off with this summer red again.

The Society's Beaujolais-Villages, which is priced just £7.50, certainly gets a cross in our box.?This one, from the much-lauded 2015 vintage, is considered by the Society to be the best of a generation.

It is wonderfully fresh, abundantly fruity and aromatic, and probably more than you might expect for a B-V at this price.

When the weather's good, serve it chilled with anything from charcuterie to baked cheese.

Given Northern Irish politics seems set to play a massive part in the UK parliament for the foreseeable, it seems to fit to have a 'green wine' this week too - namely a vinho verde from Portugal.

And it just so happens the Society have an Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Loureiro Vinho Verde in their ranks, priced £8.75.

A real summer white, it's a refreshing meadow-fragrant wine, made from the delicate loureiro grape variety by one of Portugal’s leading winemakers, Anselmo Mendes.

Lastly, to mark anyone who 'rose' above the parapet in the General Election (that really is a tenuous pun), here's a lovely summer rosé - the Rosé Duo des Plages Vin de France, priced £6.50.

A charming rosé from the Languedoc, made from cinsault and Grenache by LGI, which supplies The Society with a number of southern French favourites. Dry, easy to drink and refreshing, it’s the perfect anytime wine.

l THE Wine Society has recently launched a new click and collect service. It has a delivery service using its own van fleet plus other couriers but, for members who are unable to wait in for weekday deliveries, the click and collect service online allows wine to be sent a selected local store of choice - any of over 3,000 nationwide which belong to the Pass My Parcel network.
