York had been spoilt with a visual treat as the Blue and Grey coat schools paraded through the streets of York on their way to a service at St Michael le Belfrey as part of its anniversary celebrations.

Pocklington Council School had a celebration of its own after winning the Pocklington and District Schools Athletic Association sports championships shield with 37 points.

Workmen in York had made a strange discovery of two human skulls while digging a pit at the National Glass Company, Fishergate.

Mr Walter Elsegood one of the labourer’s employed by the company, was digging a pit in which to place a new boiler, when he noticed what he thought to be two curious cobbles at the side of the pit.

After the two gruesome discoveries the workmen continued to search the area for further remains, but their efforts were fruitless.

York City Baths Club swimmers were in great form after winning six county championships at the Yorkshire ASA group gala in Scarborough.

Not only did the swimmers take home this fantastic victory but in two of the events they took first, second and third placings, a feat they had accomplished before but never twice at one gala.

It was also a first for Mrs Joyce Blake, headmistress of the Mount School, York, when she became the first woman to give an address at a service in York Minster.

June 12 had also become a bonanza day for shareholders in Telefusion, the £7,400,000 Blackpool-based rental group which was to run the new Yorkshire ITV.

Mr Isles, director of the new company, also revealed that the new Yorkshire television service would go out in colour as well as black and white.

Council workers battled to clean up sewage floating in a York street after a night of torrential rain.

Throughout the city drains were at breaking point, flooding roads and causing chaos for drivers.

Water Lane was the worst hit area of the city where children on their way to school were spotted paddling in the sewage.

As council workers struggled to clear the flood water a large crack had been revealed in the road which was thought to have been caused by tremendous pressure of water building up beneath its surface.

According to the City of York Council the problem had been caused by the freak weather conditions.
