CLLR Denise Craghill’s call for Gillygate to be closed shows just how detached from reality the Green Party are (The Press, May 22).
There is no doubt that action is needed to reduce air pollution, but simply diverting traffic away from one street will move the problem elsewhere, not solve it.
At least the Conservative-led city council is taking action to reduce delays by investing in new controls for traffic lights, and this in itself will help to reduce pollution.
The Green Party, in their dream world, have great hopes of winning the by-elections in Micklegate and Hull Road wards, but I would ask those who will be voting in those wards to think seriously about the consequences – none of the Socialist parties have any real answers to the city’s problems and only the Conservatives can give the leadership that our city needs.
Peter Dew, Cllr for Rawcliffe and Clifton Without (Conservative), Rivelin Way, Clifton Moor, York
