AN OSCAR-WINNING filmmaker from near York has started work on her next project.

The film, FOG, is to be produced by Serena Armitage’s new company, York-based Red Breast Productions, and is being supported through Film London’s “London Calling”scheme, set up to nurture and champion the UK’s most exciting breakthrough talent.

Filming is due to start later this month but Serena, who was born and brought up in Nun Monkton, west of York, and won a Best Short Film Oscar last year for her film Stutterer, is appealing for extra funding to complete the financial package.

She said: “We are asking for support to help us over the line to raise the last portion of funding, so that we can deliver FOG in the way we envisage it - a unique cinematic experience that stands out from the crowd.”

Serena said it had been an ‘incredible’ 15 months, with first the Oscar for Stutterer, which was beyond her wildest dreams, and then an award from the British Film Institute (BFI) which allowed her to set up her own independent production company, Red Breast, and now FOG.

She said the film would tell the story of Charlie, who saw the world in a different way to everyone else and didn’t speak, with people struggling to fathom what went on inside his head.

She said: “All of us at Red Breast Productions share a desire to tell simple, compelling stories that get to the heart of the shared human experience. FOG does exactly that.

“Charlie lives in the secluded peace of the countryside with his father Henry, a rugged outdoorsy type, who cares for him.

“But Charlie’s world is turned upside down when tragedy strikes, and he is moved to live with his uncle Morris in the city. The peaceful calm of the countryside - all Charlie has ever known - is replaced with the chaos of urban life.”
