YORK Guildhall Orchestra's final concert of the 2016-2017 season will be "something a little different" with an evening of Proms-style music – many of the usual favourites and fun for all the family – on Saturday at York Barbican.

The 7.30pm concert will present two world premieres, the first being the opening overture Cruachan by York composer Dick Blackford, a long-time supporter of the Guildhall Orchestra, who named his piece after one of his favourite Scottish mountains. The second will be Lotto, an  interpretation of the university's motto, “That they might have life, and life more abundantly”, by York St John University graduate Lauren Leigh.

"They are both lovely, approachable pieces and it has been a pleasure working with both composers to make sure that we perform the pieces exactly as they would wish them to sound," says conductor Simon Wright.

Mezzo soprano soloist Louise Winter will perform Sea Pictures, Sir Edward Elgar's evocative setting of five poems by English poets, and members of various York choirs – Micklegate Singers, Chanticleer Singers, Chapter House Choir and York St John University Chamber Choir – plus Leeds Festival Chorus members will join the orchestra on stage to sing the choral sections of the popular Proms pieces in the second half.

Step forward the usual suspects: Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No.1, Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Malcolm Sargent's arrangement of Arne's Rule Britannia and Elgar's arrangement of Parry's Jerusalem.

The programme also accommodates the Prelude to Act 1 of Wagner's Lohengrin and Poulenc's spiky ballet suite, Les Biches. Tickets cost £5 to £22 on 0844 854 2757 or at yorkbarbican.co.uk

"And remember to bring your union flags for the second half and join in the fun," says Simon Wright.
