A DOG owner has urged people to take home their litter after her family’s pet was badly injured by broken glass at a local beauty spot.

Ann Race faced with a £380 vet’s bill after her dog, Jasper, cut one of his paws on the glass in Orchard Fields in Malton.

She said: “We were out on our usual circular walk around Willow Woods and Orchard Fields when I stopped to talk to another dog walker.

“I went on to catch Jasper up and found him whimpering in pain with blood pouring out one of his paws.

“When I looked around the area was littered with broken glass and other discarded rubbish.

“It is shocking - there is a variety of wildlife in the area which could also have been seriously injured or even a child.”

Ann, who lives in Old Malton, said: “Orchard Fields is a lovely part of the town, but it is becoming an eyesore and a dangerous place to walk.

“Fortunately Jasper is on the mend, but he is still on pain-killers and needs his stitches removing.”

Fellow dog owner Janie Earle, who lives in Norton, said she no longer walked her dog Poppy in Orchard Fields after she was also badly cut by broken glass.

“Poppy was injured on three separate occasions and the third time it was so bad she had to have part of the pad on her paw removed,” she said.

“Whoever is doing this should be made to clean it all up. Why do they feel the need to do this sort of thing. There are children who play there, who could be severely injured if they fall on the glass.”

Orchard Fields, is owned by the Fitzwilliam Malton Estate, and leased to Malton Town Council.

Malton mayor Councillor Paul Andrews said: “It is irresponsible of people to leave their rubbish, particularly tins and broken glass in public places. These areas have been set aside for enjoyment by the public.

“The Orchard Fields area is the closest we have to a public park in Malton and Norton, and I would urge people to respect the area and take their rubbish home.”
