TWO more candidates have been confirmed a York by-election taking place next month.

The resignation of Labour councillor David Levene means a by-election will be held on June 8 to find a new representative for the Hull Road ward.

The Conservative party has announced its candidate will be 28-year-old Matt Freckelton, a York-based businessman and local party deputy chairman.

He said: “I am delighted to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for Hull Road which is an area that I know well having lived in it for a number of years.

“One of the main issues I am concerned about in is the risks of too many Houses in Multiple Occupation in an area.

"Students are a great and vital asset to our city but we must ensure they work with, as they generally do, local residents rather than causing issues.

"Whilst many people view Hull Road as a relatively central ward, I am well aware that it links into the countryside and it is only Conservatives that will protect the greenbelt and our open spaces.” Meanwhile the Green party has confirmed its candidate John Cossham will stand in Hull Road again. In 2015, Mr Cossham was the highest placed Green candidate and was only 200 votes away from beating Cllr Levene into fourth place and taking the council seat. Hull Road is represented by three councillors and at present all are held by the Labour party.
