A CCTV image has been released of a man police want to speak to after a handbag was taken from a shop.

North Yorkshire Police said a man waited outside Rock ‘n’ Novelties shop on Foreshore Road, Scarborough, until the shop assistant’s back was turned.

A spokesperson for the force said: "He then entered the shop, approached the counter and picked up a handbag from behind the counter.

"He left the building, walked around the corner and ran up Eastborough.

"A shop assistant followed the man, who discarded the bag as he made off."

The attempted theft happened on March 25.

Police want the public's help to identify the man pictured.

He is described as in his mid-60s with shoulder-length hair and a stocky build.
