A HAPPY couple are today celebrating 60 years since they tied the knot.
John Maw, 85, and his wife Evelyn, 82, of Elmpark Drive, Heworth, got married six decades ago at All Saints Church, Pavement.
Mr Maw, a keen rugby player, married his sweetheart after completing his National Service in the Royal Engineers at Fayid in Egypt.
He went on to work as a teacher and taught P.E. at schools across York, including Joseph Rowntree School, St Peter’s School and St John’s College, while Mrs Maw worked for Timothy Whites and Taylors, and later Asda.
The couple, who have three daughters, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, will be celebrating their anniversary with a party.
Mr Maw said: “The secret to a long marriage is getting on well and supporting each other.
“We’ve done that well over the years.”
