A POLICE helicopter was scrambled to York city centre this morning to search for a burglar.

North Yorkshire Police was called to a burglary in progress at a cosmetics shop in Low Petergate at 2.55am.

A spokesman for the force said: "Our officers arrived at the scene with four minutes of the call, and the police helicopter attended soon after.

"Despite an extensive area search, no one has been arrested at this time, and forensic enquiries are ongoing at the premises this morning."

The helicopter was assisted by North Yorkshire Police Dog Section and the York South police team.

Meanwhile, a police helicopter was also called to York this morning following concerns over the safety of a person in or near the River Ouse.
