YORK City boss Gary Mills will not be on a revenge mission when his team play host to Wrexham – the club who sacked him in October.

Mills was relieved of his duties at the Racecourse Ground after a run of four defeats from six games when the Dragons were sitting 15th in the National League standings.

Just three days after leaving North Wales, Mills filled the managerial vacancy left by Jackie McNamara’s switch to a chief executive role at Bootham Crescent.

Mills’ Wrexham successor Dean Keates, meanwhile, has now taken just two points from a possible 21 with the Welsh club 12th in the table.

A home win this afternoon would move City to within three points of today’s visitors, increasing the chances of Mills overhauling his old club with two further fixtures then left to play.

But, with the Minstermen still only sitting outside the relegation zone on goal difference, the ex-Gateshead and Tamworth boss is focussed on his current club’s needs, rather than setting any personal records straight.

On the prospect of facing the former European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finalists, Mills insisted: “I’ve got nothing to prove, just as when York got rid of me four years ago, I had nothing to prove then.

“I know what I can do - I’m 55 and I’m experienced in terms of what happens in football. I’m York City manager and this is my club, so I’ve got to put a team out there to beat Wrexham, because the importance of doing that is massive.

“I enjoyed my time there, but they decided to part with me. I’m not the first that’s happened to in football and you move on.

“You never stop learning and I had different experiences there, so I learned things before I came back to a club that’s close to me and I came back for a reason – to keep us in the league and win the FA Trophy final, which we’re still on course to do at the minute.”

Mills, meanwhile, reasoned that he is not as familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of his old team as might be expected.

The side that lost 3-1 at home to Maidstone on Good Friday boasted four players who have been added to the ranks since his departure, including ex-Minstermen pair Russell Penn and Ntumba Massanka, with Mills pointing out: “I know about some of their players, although they’ve made quite a few changes and, as ever, it will be all about us doing our jobs right.”
