FIREFIGHTERS were called out after several campfires and bonfires were lit in York and North Yorkshire in the fine weekend weather.

Youths who started a camp fire in Knavesmire Woods on Sunday evening were given advice by crews from Acomb who went to the blaze, which was out on arrival.

Crews were also called to The Gallops in York to investigate reports of a fire in a field. A search revealed the bonfire was in a garden and under supervision.

Another camp fire in Ellison Avenue, Scarborough, was put out by a local resident before crews could get to the scene.

Meanwhile, firefighters also went to a property in Burdyke Avenue, York, after a digital TV box caught fire. It was removed to the open by the occupier and was out on crews’ arrival. The cause was believed to be an electrical fault.
