85 years ago

A fierce gale raged in Yorkshire and the North with snow falling in many parts of the district.

Shepherds in the wild moorland districts of the Pennines were out all day during the storm searching for many hundreds of ewes and lambs which were in danger.

In Selby the gale was the worst experienced in April for many years.

The first hockey trial for Yorkshire public schoolboys was held at St Peter’s School, York, when the Whites beat the Colours by seven goals to four.

An omnibus which travelled between London and Newcastle, had caught fire at Catterick Camp boundary.

The bus which had left Sande’s Soldiers’ Home, Catterick, carrying 13 passengers had to be pulled over as smoke billowed out from underneath the driver’s front seat.

The Catterick Garrison fire engine arrived just in time to contain the fire before anyone was seriously hurt.

50 years ago

Jayne Mansfield added a touch of glamour to York’s Press Ball at Tiffany’s in York, before the taxi heading back to her hotel caught fire.

Film star Jayne had to hitch a lift to the Scotch Corner Hotel, where she was staying.

The ball certainly didn’t need keeping alight, as Miss Mansfield’s appearance was a surprise touch for 600 guests, who were also was entertained by comedian Freddy ‘Parrot Face’ Davies, a London Palladium star and singer Jennie Maynard.

The BBC recorded an audience of more than £150m viewers for the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna.

Britain’s entry was Sandie Shaw with Puppet On A String.

A new club in Selby held its first meeting at the Crown and Anchor Inn.

The Pontoon Club was made up of 21 members of the town’s defunct Territorial Army unit.

The teen heart throb was discovered when living on an inner-city council estate with his mother, who read tea leaves for a living.

Football star Diego Maradona was taken to hospital after falling ill while appearing on Chilean TV.

And Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and his new wife Patsy Kensit were playing a game of cat and mouse with the world’s media after their shock secret wedding.
