HUNDREDS of supporters have backed controversial plans for a new street food hub.

Spark:York, which hopes to put 20 converted shipping containers on the former Reynards garage site in Piccadilly, York, has been backed by more than 500 people.

Residents and businesses wrote to City of York Council in support of the containers, arranged over two levels for retail, restaurant, office and performance space.

Joe Gardham, director of Spark:York, said: “It’s been humbling the volume of support we’ve had over the last week.

“This city belongs to over 200,000 people, and everyone has an equal right to say what works for York.”

The company faces opposition, however, mainly from Northminster Ltd, which plans to build a £25million new hotel in the same street and has put its proposals on ice over doubts the Spark project meets national planning policy guidelines for conservation areas.

Mr Gardham added: “We have really listened and tried to engage with those opposed to the project, and respect everybody’s opinion, whether for or against our plans.”

Objectors have raised concerns about noise pollution and the impact it will have on residents nearby.

One of 38 objectors to write to the authority said: “ I believe this to be an eyesore with minimal chances of financial success leaving a bill to be picked up by council ratepayers in the future and a damming statement of the council’s inability to deliver a meaningful scheme which would contribute to the regeneration of the area and benefit York residents generally.”

The application will be presented to the council’s Planning Committee next month.
